The
Macross franchise has tons of appeal to people outside of the teenage boy crowd and mecha otaku crowd. There are love triangles, lots of awesome music of various genres, a fun mix of comedy with drama, and characters with potential moe appeal like Mylene and Gamlin. I know that I definitely didn't pick up
SDF Macross for the variable fighters.
This large range of appeal beyond mecha is probably a strong factor that has allowed the
Macross franchise to last until today.
