Would you want that to happen if it meant altering the storyline (assuming that such a thing hasn't yet taken place in the MnH manga)?

kinda... it's not really all that far off if they go by the manga timetable. But she doesn't stay away very long and Seiji's asleep the entire time so he doesn't even realize it. Plus I believe it obvious that she's going to leave eventually. I mean, come on.

We also see flashbacks to her before she was on his hand. You know, school life and so forth. Just in case that counts too.

Actually she goes back to her body at the beginning of the 2nd volume in the manga, and while Seiji is pretty happy at the beginning for recovering his right hand, in the end he realizes he misses Midori.
