I wouldn't say it is a 'recent' phenomenon though, unless you count at least 17 years (starting with NGE/Gundam Wing being the earliest biggest ones I came across) as being recent. Heck, the VERY term fujoshi refers to the fact that they see homosexual tendencies where normal people would see none. And the term fujoshi has been circulating around for a very long time already.
