Like I said it's a number of factors. If he had time to process just what was going on around him, the powder keg would not have exploded as it did. I mean that was the whole thing back when he screwed up the first time. He pushed her away because he had the time to think and knew better than to blow up in her face, especially as she had succeed.
Here there's no such relief, in fact it comes off (as unintentionally as it is) that she's deliberately failing for reasons that (due to her lack of understanding how to express her emotional feelings) are utterly beyond him. It defys all logic to him, he at least had the safety net of "She's better than me" back when he failed the first time and with out that, kaboom.
Like I said, it's not cool that he exploded, but this is a million miles from Rita and her whole stich from a couple of episodes back.
