Raishin and Marcus had a duel at the end of Vol7.
Raishin gained partial mastery over the Akabane technique by using a complicated rune on his right hand, granted by his master. Yaya was able to go up against three of Marcus' automatons and gained an upperhand at the start of the fight. However the lack of understanding of the enemy automaton's actual powers, in combination of Marcus starting to take the fight a little more seriously, caused Raishin to be mercilessly defeated.
Alice bought Raishin some time to escape by sacrificing one of her mechanical arms and was going to sacrifice herself to save Raishin by using an illusion to disguise herself as Raishin and allowing Marcus to kill her. Obviously Raishin regained consciousness in time to stop her from dying. The fight was stopped by the headmaster just in time (because he was forced to by other events that have taken place).
Note that Marcus only bought along three of his six automatons.
Note that almost everything have been prearranged by Alice (including "blackmailing" the headmaster/her father). This is a good example of her being a tactical genius.
TL;DR: Raishin fought Marcus. Marcus lifted his hand and almost killed Raishin.
Vol 8:
Marcus sent two of his automatons to help Raishin get inside a barrier to defeat the Black Prince in vol8 because he is interested in Raishin's growth and mastery over the Akabane family technique.
Marcus is turning more and more like Itachi...
(*)she is known as the Wiseman of the Maze because she possess a complicated tattoo on her face, usually hidden by her hair. The tattoo enables her to use her own family technique(**), the Ariadne's String, which is a red line capable of restricting the magical circulation an opponent (Raishin originally thought it is the same thing as his family technique as they both create magic strings from fingertips - which is why he wanted to become her apprentice). That string is also capable of solving mazes as a human's magic circulation system is a labyrinth in itself. (Look up the legend of the Minotaur and Labyrinth).
Magical circulation is similar to blood circulation. You can disable automatons and suffocate people with the string.
I believe by applying Ariadne's String to Raishin's hand, it can stabilize the magic power within Raishin allowing him to partially master the Akabane technique. Marcus pointed out that Raishin is not the first one to do something like that: even though the method Raishin used is unique, the same theory have been used by members of the clan in the past. Marcus claimed by taking the "shortcut" Raishin threw his potential away.
(**) As mentioned in another post earlier. The tattoo/markings allow anyone potent enough to use the Ariadne's String, which is why she has been guarding it closely. At the end of her volume she split the secret manual into half: one went to the headmaster, and the other went to the magician association.

Magic strings from fingertips? Not unlike a certain puppet technique from Naruto. Couple that with the fact that Marcus and Raishin is just like Itachi and Sasuke this is just like Naruto.
