It just started getting really good at the end of volume 6 with the tournament thing so I'd say they meant haven't read them...

Spoiler for vol 6+: As we see Fenix starting to get bad ass in vol 6. The only sort of downside is from what I heard the tournament arc is still going on in the latest volume 9. Although Fenix supposedly fully awakens his bloodline in it...
