No, he has not gone berserk mode in this fight. His activation of light is not what causes it but it is a part of it. Clearly there wasn't a change in mentality when the light was activated and it clearly stated that his strength still wasn't on par to that of a Swordie.

The author isn't afraid to kill off characters, whether it's the sun cultists, academy students and perhaps even more relevant characters........So there will be deaths throughout, but the plot twists and the craziness do get toned down a notch.
