If i catched it right, Matsuri's plan was to get help from the Russians. They could launch a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur (over which Yukari flew on her route) to save Yukari. To buy Yukari some time (her life support system would only last for 12 hours) Matsuri flew to her. But later the Russians told Nasuda that they have a technical defect with the Soyuz so they could not launch.

I don't speak Japanese, but I did catch the word "Soyuz," so I figured they were trying to do something like this.

What impresses me about this show - and other anime series before it, especially Planetes - is how much respect its creators have for the realities of spaceflight. Yes, there are silly things thrown in there too, but when you compare it to most American TV shows and movies, the difference is like night and day.

Not bad for a country whose first citizen in space probably set the record for zero-gravity barfing.
