Luckily, there is an easy method: start throwing ideas around in your head until they stick. Then, if it has the faintest tint of "American from hugely dark and complex past (or no past) is second male IS pilot / ERMAHGURD I WANT TO SELF INSERT" obliterate it from your mind and thought process.
