Luckily, there is an easy method: start throwing ideas around in your head until they stick. Then, if it has the faintest tint of "American from hugely dark and complex past (or no past) is second male IS pilot / ERMAHGURD I WANT TO SELF INSERT" obliterate it from your mind and thought process. It worked for me... eventually.
Also, wavehawk, I can see why you are having trouble writing about a cold setting when it's warm. I have the exact opposite problem, i.e. I'm trying to write about the middle of August at ISA while there's a thick layer of ice on the roads.
