You need the pictures to look less like you copy and pasted them into the background.
Make the characters a gif and select a large section of it.
Zoom in on the borders of the pictures and select them and delete them so its transparent.
Then flatteen the layers and save it as jpeg ;D
Should take care of the crappy borders i think.
