If the creators didn't want it to be compared to the original series, they should've chosen a different name, used different characters, etc. By using the same name, the same characters (or different version thereof), the same or a similar setting, they are inviting a comparison. It's inevitable. You can't do all that stuff and then cry foul when people compare it to the original you derived the show from. Deviations from the original aren't bad by default, but what people are complaining about here is the lack of depth and 'character', something one watching the original could take for granted.
