Bits on Wheels is a great OS X client, though still being worked on. Azureus is the best if you need transport encryption to BitTorrent (i.e. you're on a packet-shaped network like that found on a typical college campus).

As for playback, I don't see what's hard about playing back anime on VLC. Always seems to work for me. For the few times I get very bizarre MKV files, I have mplayer around as a backup. And QuickTime's not bad once you have the DivX and Flip4Mac components.

Of course, the Intel business makes that a little complicated. At the moment you have to launch QuickTime in Rosetta mode in order to watch WMV (since the Flip4Mac component isn't yet Universal). This is why I'm not getting an Intel Mac until early next year when all these sorts of little niggling issues have been taken care of (and CS3 is out... and Leopard is out... etc.)
