Well, I haven't read the manga myself but didn't she say that it allows her to see things 'that should remain unseen'.

I still think Mei just like to make stuff up for the lulz and I figure that that's just one of those cases along with her saying she doesn't remember the elevator conversation she had with Kouichi and then there'd the whole "I don't exist " declaration.
