This is a term used in DVD marketing. DVD players are designed to only play DVDs from the region where they sold. For instance, if you purchase your DVD player in the United States, it will only play r1 DVDs.

1	Bermuda, Canada, United States and U.S. territories
2	The Middle East, Western Europe, Central Europe, Egypt, French overseas territories, Greenland, Japan, Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland
