Actually, I find the relationship between the two interesting even if romance was taken out of the equation. In a sense, they're kindred spirits. They're opposites in that one is bound to a single place while the other is forced to wander. The two are cursed with uncertain futures (due to the forbidden mushi and the Tokoyami) and yet they cling on to hope while retaining their respect for all forms of life. Even without the romance, there's mutual recognition, respect, and admiration for the other's calmness and strength of character but all of it is expressed in a subtle manner.
