The Dwarves, if you know your Middle Earth lore, were singing about the dragon, and the day he came to the Lonely Mountain.

Is there any concrete information about the material the second film will cover? Anything at all? At first I heard it was going to be background events that didn't explicitly occur in The Hobbit novel so much as in supplementary materials, but who knows if that had any truth.

I know this much for sure, and it was shown a bit in this trailer..

Spoiler for you're right:

As you said, it actually did happen, but was only mentioned almost in passing by Gandalf. He said something along the lines of "I'm going to see about the Necromancer in the South." when he and the company parted ways at the edge of Mirkwood. Apparently, in the film, we'll see what Gandalf did that drove the Necromancer (I know who it is, but I won't say here) out. I suspect it's the scene in the trailer where Gandalf is shown thrusting his staff down into the earth and theres an explosion of light.
