Amazons are BELIEVED to be a RACE of female warriors, much like the Spartan army which puts alot of emphasis on sexual segregation.

They aren't in the first place to start with (no woman is a lesbian to begin with! It is a belief system cultivated through life - and it is a right of personal choice). They are supposedly a reference to "warrior women" endowed with agility and grace in contrast to strength and brute force of their male counterparts.
