Yeah. As serious as that particular situation demands. And why can't he smile? If it's a good fight, and he's not risking his or someone else's life I think it's totally fine. It doesn't mean he's not being serious.
And like I said, all this also applies to Yuuki. Kirito might use both swords if it was a life or dead situation, but you don't know if Yuuki wouldn't pull off some secret tech of her own in such a situation as well. Kirito's comment in that fictional interview suggests that he at least thought it wouldn't be rare for Yuuki to be hiding something up her sleeve too.
