I referred to that article about print newspapers because alternative strategies have been mooted for delivering manga content, which I find do not account sufficiently for Japan's unique market and social conditions. Manga and newspapers may be different products, but the strong link between readership habits and print-media sustainablity in Japan should not be cursorily dismissed.

Especially in a country where online distribution is not as widespread as in many Western markets. I would think the problem is more due to a shrinking target market (the interesting question would be whether there are simply fewer young eyes, or that Japanese youth are increasingly turning to online sources) than anything the manga industry is doing "wrong", in terms of circulation.
