Its more likely that older cars were not build to have crumble zones that take the energy out of the collision. So, that impulse of the impact is lessened for the occupants of the cars. In that case, the old car was just sturdy, but when it collides with anything but a modern car is definitly more deadly for the driver.
Cars these days are made to crumble everywhere except for the passenger compartment - so its not an aspect of quality but safety.
