yeah, the biggest hurdle remains that there are a lot of backstories in the previous book series.

Personally I don't mind seeing those in there for the reason stated by Duo above. To me one of the major appeal of Kyoukaisen is that it felt much like a fantasy SRPG. Knowing the exact reason why it's there makes it a lot more worthwhile however.
