Hence the ninja ranks basically mean :
Jounin = jou (onyomi of ue which means above) + nin : Upper class ninja
Chuunin = chuu (onyomi of naka which means middle) + nin : middle class ninja

Just to add: In the same way sannin means three ninjas (and not three people as stated two posts above).
