Hence the ninja ranks basically mean :
Jounin = jou (onyomi of ue which means above) + nin : Upper class ninja
Chuunin = chuu (onyomi of naka which means middle) + nin : middle class ninja
Genin = ge (onyomi of shita which means under) + nin : lower class ninja
