He passed out because when you're bedridden besides the muscles you usually think of, your heart muscles and lungs already start to atrophy because they don't exert as much to pump blood/air as when you're standing up. After that long period if you suddenly stood up, you'd feel dizzy, lack of breath and cold sweating as if you just ran a marathon without physical training.
