In the VN this was achieved with the light orbs. That didn't carry over that well to the anime as OutFoxZero said

I think they tried to convey the message by having Okazaki help everyone still even without the light orbs featuring heavily. It doesn't work as well though.

The main message of the anime and another message for the VN is to try your best for your friends and people around you, and to not give up. I think it implied with the illusionary world scenes that the cycle of Ushio dies then reset switch has happened many times already. Illusionary world Okazaki is aware of this and keeps on trying.
