There is nothing new about the conflict between an artist's desire for the freedom of expression and the interests of "the business." It has been going on since the glory days of film making in the early 20th century.

Every once in a while you have an independent come along who retains a lot of creative control over their work, Shinkai Makoto for example (who takes yeeears to make a film), but for the most part, directors NEED money to see their visions through and that means cooperation with studios and their resources.
