Use this link to see Vol. 30 (Monday, July 23, 2007 - Sunday, July 29, 2007) of the weekly television animation program top 10 list for the Kantou region, Japan after Video Research Ltd. archives it when Vol. 31 comes out next week.

FNS 27-Hour TV (FNS 27jikan Terebi), an annual event signaling the start of summer vacation for schoolchildren in Japan, took place this year from Saturday, July 28, 2007, 7:00pm to Sunday, July 29, 2007, 9:15pm on Fuji TV. It preempted Gegege no Kitarou, One Piece, Chibi Maruko-chan, and Sazae-san.

(Summer vacation commonly starts on Marine Day (Uminohi), July 20, and last six weeks.)

It also likely also drew viewers away from Yes! Pretty Cure 5 on TV Asahi and caused a dip in its television audience rating.

Note: FNS stands for Fuji Network System.

<Data as of March 2005>
Note: 1 billion = 1,000,000,000

According to the preceding data from Toei Animation Co., Ltd., Futari wa Pretty Cure sold over 600 million - or over a half billion - US dollars worth of merchandise in Japan during fiscal year 2004.

With substantially higher figures in television audience ratings (7.3% -> 7.9%) and Bandai Namco character sales (10.1 billion yen -> 12.3 billion yen, an increase of 21.7 percent), plus two theatrical animated features (over one billion yen in total gross receipts at the Japanese box office), among other things, it is a very safe bet that Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart sold considerably more US dollars worth of merchandise and whatnot in Japan during fiscal year 2005 than its predecessor Futari wa Pretty Cure did during fiscal year 2004.

Data show that the Pretty Cure series took a nosedive in television audience ratings and character sales during fiscal year 2006 with Futari wa Pretty Cure Splash*Star.

Data also show that the Pretty Cure series is rebounding in television audience ratings and character sales during fiscal year 2007 with Yes! Pretty Cure 5 - but still falling short of Futari wa Pretty Cure Heart, and still well behind Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart.

Well, I think it [Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart] was a success
After the Luminous effect.

According to Japanese poster yZXpQ9W6 at livedoor, the great increase in Namco Bandai character sales for the Futari wa Pretty Cure franchise is due to the "Luminous effect."

"Luminous" refers to Kujou Hikari, aka Shiny Luminous, introduced in the first episode of Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart broadcasted on TV Asahi / ABC (Asahi Broadcasting Corporation) on Sunday, February 6, 2005, 8:30am-9:00am. (She does not appear at all in Futari wa Pretty Cure.)

Kujou Hikari / Shiny Luminous (CV: Tanaka Rie) joins returning Futari wa Pretty Cure heroines Misumi Nagisa / Cure Black (CV: Honna Youko) and Yukishiro Honoka / Cure White (CV: Yukana) as the three protagonists in Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart. The storyline revolves around Hikari / Luminous, who represents the "Queen's life" ("Queen no inochi").

Note: CV = Character Voice

With Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart leading the pack, and even with Japan's declining birth rate, the Pretty Cure franchise has been a tremendous moneymaker in Japan, having generated well over one billion US dollars in Japanese sales alone in just two years, from March 2004 to March 2006.
