Because as a genre, Romance (at least originally, but most people have no conception of this) does not mean love stories... I can't really be bothered to explain, it's much easier if you just look at the Wikipedia article on the subject. (Notice Romance of the Three Kingdoms is listed at the bottom.) If you're a Wikipedia hater, here's the appropriate definition from dictionary.com:
  1. A long medieval narrative in prose or verse that tells of the adventures and heroic exploits of chivalric heroes: an Arthurian romance.
  2. A long fictitious tale of heroes and extraordinary or mysterious events, usually set in a distant time or place.
  3. The class of literature constituted by such tales.
