Reminds me of the Black Tech and the Whispered from Full Metal Panic. But yeah, randomly developing something that has the basis of a personality and recognizable emotions and interacts with the pilot(s) like it does... she's doing SOMETHING to get IS Cores... making these things from scratch with just computer code is less believable than her capturing and modifying alien technology/life.
