Weaponized Organic Replicating Machines (WORMs) are Artificial life forms consisting entirely of thousands to millions of 'cells' approximately a foot in diameter, which are themselves created by nanotechnology. These come together to form large monsters that wreak havoc. WORMs are responsible for the destruction of one-third of human population.

AD 2074. Not being able to turn the situation in their favor, humanity decided to permit the use of weapons of mass destruction. And they succeeded in the annihilation of the WORMs. However, the price they paid was enormous. All the major continents were broken apart. Antarctica disappeared, and half of the remaining land mass was submerged. The largest damage this war caused was the loss of 90% of all military-age personnel, namely men in their twenties and thirties.

In 2078, Young Scientist Shinonono Tabane proposed a new prototype military unit, Infinite Stratos, to be Developed in the case of hypothetical future WORM attack. However, she was killed in a massive lab accident.

Alternative method and technologies was made to complete the unfinished design. The first sortie of units was launched, introduced as [Sonic Divers] in 2086. After the birth of Sonic Divers, Humanity slowly regain footing and keep the WORM attack on bay, however, due to the scarcity of suitable pilot and extremely high cost, Humans can only fight to survive.

Further simplification of Sonic Divers technology allowing mass production of Sonic Divers as well as various substitute/complement weapons and combat unit. In 2087, a special combat division, Armored Sonic Diver Force (A.S.D.F.), was created with WORM Eradication in mind.

Ichika Orimura is one of the A.S.D.F. rookie, but otherwise talented pilot. During the massive assault on Gigantic WORM fleet, he is declared M.I.A., 18 February 2088, at the age of 15. However, the mission was nonetheless successful.

In 2078, a Japanese scientist engineers a powered exoskeleton called "Infinite Stratos" (IS). Possessing technology and combat capabilities far more advanced than any other weapon system, the IS threatens to destabilize the world.

Faced with such an overpowering weapon, the nations of the world enact the "Alaska Treaty", which states that IS will never be used for military combat and that existing IS technology must be equally distributed to all nations, to prevent any one nation from dominating the others.

The introduction of the IS does, however, have a major effect on society. As IS can only be operated by women, there is a shift in the power balance between men and women, where women now dominate society over men.

Ten years of newfound peace has passed....

Ichika Orimura is one of 150 student newly enrolled at I.S. Academy, an international academy where IS pilots from all over the world are trained. A lot of Expectation waiting for the promising I.S. pilot, who happened to be the younger sister of legendary Pilot, Orimura Chifuyu.
