Monster Hunter Tri, like other capcom console MMO's are subscription based in japan. This dates back to the PS2. Games like monster hunter, monster hunter 2, biohazard outbreak 1 & 2 all required that you have online licence thing. Only the portable version were truly subscription free, but since they don't run on servers. The costs for the console game overseas were covered either by capcom, ps2 games, or by nintendo, MHTri.
