How could anyone fault him for living it up? I think he was setting himself up for a huge fall, but death? I don't even think he really was a bad guy either, just completely clueless. I can't even blame him for letting it get to his head, he's had so much success that it got the better of him.
He just assumed everyone was as fickle (and horny) as he was, and for the most part he was right (exceptions being Sekai and Kotonoha).
