Also, it's not that much of a surprise if people actually got hurt during the Gospel's escape, is it? Here's the aftermath scene of the Gospel attack/escape from the base:

“Gurrrh…”

“Sergeant…? Sergeant! Doctor, he’s coming through!”

‘Doctor…?’

“Sergeant, can you hear me?”

“Urh…!”

The soldier wakes up from an apparent slumber with bandages wrapped around various parts of his body. Somewhat lost, he looks around the area and realizes that he’s on an infirmary bed with his fellow soldiers on the sides along with a young lady whom he does not recognize.

“W-Who are you…?”

“Iris Calling of the Infinite Stratos unit, Sergeant.”

Acknowledging her name, the wounded soldier nods with a respectful huff then looks to the others around her.

“She was the one who rescued you, Sarge!”

“Yeah! The Gospel nearly killed you back there but Calling managed to put up a cover around you before the energy rain hit the tarmac.”

“The tarmac’s completely blended to shit but at least we’re all safe thanks to you and Ms Calling.”

“I see… Wait, the Silver Gospel! Where is it?”

The soldiers’ rejoicing smiles immediately fade from their expressions as they look at each other. Mixed feelings stir the atmosphere with uncertainty and the wounded soldier could only wonder what everyone is thinking. Fearing the worst, he breaks the momentary silence.

“We didn’t manage to recover it huh…?”

“It blew out of our radar range within seconds. We didn’t even get the chance to mobilize, Sergeant. However… we were still able to momentarily track its movements via satellite before it deployed its optical camouflage.”

“Where is it heading?”

“West. It was passing over the Pacific before we lost track of it.”

“The Pacific…”

“Hawaii also called in earlier and said that one of their patrol flights spotted the Silver Gospel. Judging from the bearings given, it’s highly probable that the Gospel is heading for Japan.”

“Japan? Isn’t that where the Infinite Stratos Academy is?”

“That’s right. Command has already notified the Academy’s authorities of the situation. Worse comes to worst, the Academy will have to take it down.”

“I see…”

The thought of disgrace left his mind. The soldier no longer cares that the military failed to retrieve the Silver Gospel and is more worried about the ones that will handle the matter, the IS Academy. Heaving a heavy sigh, he drops his head and clenches his fists on the bed.

‘We’re just placing the students’ lives at risk!’
