They can't remove kick-the-can completely, it's essential to the story.

I don't like the idea of rewriting Ever17. Some parts may be considered boring by some, but everything that's in the game is in the game for a reason. The chicken sandwiches might have been boring to many, but they provided a lot of casual character interaction, which is often lacking or completely absent in 'sudden disaster everybody is going to die' stories. Hell, the entire chicken sandwich thing would be worth it even for just Kid's outburst when he gets tired of the food alone.

Spoiler: In Coco route, it's the slight differences between Takeshi's kick-the-can game and Kid's kick-the-can game that finally makes Blick Winkel realize he's following two separate situations.
