the ANBU has appeared to be pretty weak thus far, I mean when they turned up during the Oro/Sandaime fight, they basically jumped into a net and got themselves burnt... pretty disappointing for an elite squad, specialised in whatever they were supposed to do.
Their only saving grace is that they had members like Itachi/Jiraiya/Kakashi...etc to boost their reputation, so people don't actually think that they are that lousy.
