Japanese sensibilities are weird. From an American standpoint, I would say that a relationship between blood-related first-cousins is what is incestuous.

Why is it so taboo for a "brother" and "sister" who are not related by blood to decide one day that they want to be lovers? Yes, the latter situation may seem strange for those who have known the two and watched them grow up together, but I would not say that it's wrong. As for first-cousins related by blood, now that is what seems wrong to me.

Can someone authoritatively confirm for me whether or not it is legal to marry your first-cousin in Japan? I'm quite sure it is not legal in most (if not all) states in the U.S.

Anyway, this is all coming from an engineer's perspective.

And I still find the side stories distracting. I'm wondering if they might ever have any relevance to the main plot. But until/unless I'm pleasantly surprised toward the end, these side stories remain annoying to me.
