Shigeru Chiba is sort of a returnee, he did have a few minor roles in the later two season of Space Battleship Yamato some 30 years ago.
I am still hoping for Masatô Ibu to come back as Dessler.
Having Rina Satou as the nurse seems interesting.
And Aya Hisakawa had an intelligent blue haired character again.

My hope would be that given the pedigree of Yamato that it isn't going to be quite as easy to pigeonhole these characters into archetypes, fetishes and Star Trek comparisons like we just tried to do once the show has been on the air for a couple months.
