So on ace's name what the heck is a portgas?

In Japanese culture, they use their last name first, followed by first. So Monkey D. Luffy, is the Japanese way of saying Luffy D. Monkey. Which is why they call him Luffy, not Monkey. Second of all If you haven't been keeping up: Luffy's Bloodline is as follows:

Monkey D. Garp (Grandfather), Monkey D. Dragon (Father), Mother is unknown. as for Portgas D. Ace.

Portgas D. Ace is Ace's real name. He is the son of Gol D. Roger, and Portgas D. Rouge. Gol D. Roger asked Monkey D. Garp to take care of him after his execution and thus he became the step-brother/adopted brother of Luffy.

As for Theories of the "D". NOTE This is NOT a spoiler, It's a theory I just used a spoiler tag to keep my post a little neater.

After reading Chapter 576 of the manga, I got the urge to discuss this topic here since both the "One Piece" and the name 'D' was mentioned. In my opinion the "One Piece" is something that will ultimately reveal the true history of the "Void Century". We know what this "something" is thanks to Nico Robin. The poneglyph she dreams to one day find to learn about the Void Century being that she is the only one who can actually read it. This specific Poneglyph, named the Rio Poneglyph. As far as we know there was an "Ancient Kingdom" that was a giant and powerful kingdom that was destroyed by the Twenty Kingdoms (which later would evolve into the World Government), this give me an impression that the "Will of 'D' " or the people with the name of 'D' are the descendant of this "Ancient Kingdom".

This is my theory, although I do have many other plausible theories. But after The White Beard Arc when WB is saying his finals words before his death.

In context I think he refers to Luffy, being the one to carry on Ace's will someday. (If you remember the episode then you know the camera is shown to find and follow Luffy when WB say's someone will carry the will someday. Carrying on...
