It is possible that a friend died, and the watch is a reminder of that. I had a friend die from internal bleeding after being blown by a mine while on duty on the DMZ (we were serving our military service at the time, as Marines), and he left me my current watch.

I hope we get more info on Sana's past in episode 10.
