However it seems that with so much of Dessler's finest away from the planet, there may be trouble afoot from members of the cabinet. Though I am not certain who would be considered a loyalist to Dessler at this point. I can see the ones that may eventually see Yamato as favorable, and those that might have designs on the Throne, but I can't quite see how this will go down (aside from the manga version of things, but there are more characters now). Dessler seems like he's got something of his own planned in relation to Iscandar (he seems to know where Yamato is going even if his Generals do not).
On the Yamato side of things, Niimi seems to be gathering people, however I cannot exactly place her aim in this. One would assume it would be an effort to colonies a world for Humanity to escape. However from episode 13 and 14 I'm getting the impression there is something else going on as well with her. Specifically her comments on Kodai and her talk with Sanada in 13 (and the one line of her delusion in 14). I get the feeling both she and Sanada knew Kodai's brother. As that seems to way the conversation went aside from thought about what the captain would do (though I might have mistaken who they were referring). The tactics used in 13 point to Niimi being very smart and generally logical, but not tactical minded (that's why they have a Tactical officer in the first place). The one thing that doesn't seem to come across visually is the difficulty of flying the Seagull in the region they were in. it looked no more difficult than Yamamoto's flight in an area of heavy rocky debris.
Shiima seems to not have come to terms with the events surrounding his father yet. It is odd having him be the angry one for a change. Kodai seems to side with Deitz based on her code of honor, and her helping them (twice). And while we don't see Shiima's father's ship fire the first shot, it is implied that he did, because he followed orders (orders he didn't agree with). Perhaps they will show us that things happened differently sometime later on. Mainly because they did not show the first shot, and by the time the ship was under fire from the Gamilas, the crew was in space suits rather than their uniforms like they were when they got the orders to fire. Why the Un wanted to fire the first shot is unknown and that the same person is involved with whatever Niimi is doing is a bit disturbing.
And then there is Yurisha (and maybe Sasha). "Goddess of the ship" as Alter called her. It seems she does look like Yuki, or we are given a projection of such. Yuria being Yurisha is also possible at this point as well, but the questions are mounting faster than we can get answers. What I wonder is if Sasha's spirit is also in the ship, specifically in the Wave Motion Core. Yurisha's line could be taken that way, though we have little evidence of a second Iscandarian spirit at this point.
On a techical level, it seems the Wave Motion Engine can be shielded.
Also I wonder why the ship has basically sonar bouys at all. Yes they are "new", but what reason do they have them at all? The Active Sonar as well, but they seemed to be fitting that out while waiting. It is still a wonder they have such a system, but given where it is, the system probably has another function normally, rather than trying to detect submarines in a dimentional rift. Best guess is they tuned something or other with the waveform Sanada detected to act like a sonar (and sound like one too).
Also Frakken is still as cool as he was before.

Niimi's line in episode 14, i'm guessing the one she says in her dream state in the engine room, what is it?
As to what she's up to, based solely on the chapter 5 episode descriptions, she might spearhead the mutiny (or whatever it will be) that takes place when they arrive on Beemera. They may have taken the elements originaly used on Iscandar and use them there, but instead of Yabu as leader of the rebells, it might be Niimi herself or, as she seems to have a lot of influence on the guy, she may just use him to forward her agenda. With Gliese 581 now a distant memory, she might try to enforce the Izumo Project on Beemera, as the planet is pretty much a new Earth. Whatever happens, Okita and Sanada will be in trouble, wonder what that will do for her relationship with her sensei?
Correct me if i'm wrong, this is what i get without the benefit of subtitles, in episode 13, Frakken uses a decoy to trick the Yamato into thinking he has given up and is retreating and Niimi falls for it while Kodai doesn't. Just to make sure, Niimi suggests modifying the subspace radar array to be used as a dimensional active sonar which will confirm the enemy has left. Kodai points out that, if it was an enemy diversion and they are still around, the ping will give away their position and suggests using the bouys instead (as to why they have them, perhaps just modified probes of some kind, much like the radar array). Am i anywhere close as to what went down?
What all this is leading is to Kodai stepping up to the role of deputy captain. In the original, with Okita no longer capable of full time command and seing that Kodai was the man for the job, he made him the de facto commander. But here, with Sanada being the XO (a role that would probably go to Mamoru, had he taken his place as Tactical Officer), they are weaving the story in a way that leads to Sanada, a man more turned to the science and technical aspects of warfare, as is shown in episode 13, to step aside and make Kodai the XO in future episodes.
As for Niimi and Sanada knowing Mamoru, we know Sanada did. In the original Sanada and Mamoru were colleages at the space academy and became good friends, though this is only revealed in the "Magnetron Fortress" episode, along with Sanada's cybernetic limbs. Although this wasn't disclosed here, in episode 1 Hijikata says "It's a pity about Kodai" and Sanada's reaction seems to indicate he did know him and is sad for his friends death. Also, Mamoru was to be the Yamato's Tactical Officer, so it's a safe bet he knew most of the officers, including Niimi and the poor bastards that died in that bunker in episode 2 (including Original Mamoru XD ). I wonder if they will keep the cyborg angle on Sanada's story? With all that's coming in chapter 5, maybe that will be a part of how he gets himself and the captain out of harm's way).
As for Yurisha/Yuki/Yuria, i already blabbed about my thoughts a couple of pages back so i won't bore you with that again. XD My thoughts on Yuria's remark about the Wave Motion Engine is that maybe Yurisha is refering to the core itself being there and believing Sasha is on board (not knowing she died). Also, since she doesn't say an actual name... could she actually be reffering to Starsha herself? Is it possible that the engine core is somehow brought to life by the spiritual energy of the queen herself?
What i find fascinating is that they managed to give propper grounding to an old element of the original, in that the Yamato itself was an entity, had a spirit, that in the most dire times would shine through and give its crew the strength and courage to overcome adversity. Here, the ship does have an actual spirit, personified in Yurisha. What i must wonder is what will be her fate when they reach Iscandar? Will she be returned to her world? Or will whatever made her become what she is now (injuries or the like) force her to remain on the Yamato in order to survive?
May the remake proceed and answer our inquisitive minds.
