I do honestly say that I've had similar misgivings myself, and that sparse character presentation really makes it hard for me to root for Oorai over Black Forest for example, which would be easier to make if interaction between Maho and Miho were shown in flashbacks for instance. I'd say that the focus of mechanical trivia can be as problematic as Treknobabble in terms of distracting from the character development angle. Imagine if K-On were as technically focused as this show (i.e. on instruments and performance), would we necessarily care about the characters as much?
