By the way, I don't want to bother with swaps. One of our local stores sells pre-modded consoles, so I get it all in a neat package anyway, ready for playing. Get game, burn it, and play. And that, certainly, is one thing none of the new consoles can't do yet.

Spoiler:
It could well be a firmware exploit like on the PSP at first.. There's allready a new firmware for the thing ( 1.10) , and there's also a tool for the firmwarefile to be split in its seperate files.. So it's "on the way" I guess in a form.. I hope the form will eventually evolve into a chip based mod.. for ease of use and safety
I've done my share of consolechipping/modding ( not trying being a hypocrite when I was saying it;s illegal cause it isn;t here, just wasn't sure about the rules concerning this kind of talk on AS) , and I prefer anything hardware-related over software.. I mean.. you dont want to brick a PS3 while flashing some custom firmware now do you
But still, if the PSP FW upgrades have learned us anything, they'll smartly use that to patch and plug holes wich the devcommunity will find in the current FW's and then you'll have your forced upgrades, otherwise the newest games won't work, just like on the PSP. In the end , all the easy holes have been plugged and you'll end up with 50 steps and exploits to get a backup working..
If they have done a simmillar thing as Microsoft with the firmwares checking some unique key.. I think it's going to take a long time for anything "perfect" to come out, if ever.
Here's some nudies
