It can be done well, but off hand the only good example I can think of with this trope is
Kobato. where it was enjoyable to watch their relationship, though Kobato's male lead was still shown to be a kind thru other means if he was harsh or cold to Kobato herself at times. So I can't say if it's the show's execution of the trope that made it good, or if it's not bad that
