I also added somewhat detailed background information (including the contents that are going be covered in Anime soon) trying to explain the reason for each girl's particular personality.
- Houki -
Spoiler for About Houki:
She has external appearance of typical yamato nadesico, being a miko and all...
(Her family used to run Shinonono Shrine, and was also leading a unique swordsmanship technique - which is obviously called Shinonono-style sword technique)
So basically her personality is of discipline and temperateness.
But because of she was raised as such, she had hard time socializing with other kids (other boys made fun of her for being boyish) so she had virtually no friends, except for Ichika who thought of her as cute girl and helped her out by chasing those boys away whenever she was being mocked.
She also has some serious emotional problem, not being able to suppress her temper and often resulting to violence.
She learned Kendo for self control, but it doesn't seem effective so far.
For an example, before IS was introduced (when she and Ichika was learning Kendo together) she proposed that she and Ichika go on a date if she won the national Kendo tournament. But right before the day of finals, the world was shocked by the 'White Knight Incident' and the Japanese government issued a special directive to protect Shinonono Tabane and her family, which included Houki as well.
Unlike 'witness protection program,' Shinonono family retained their identity, and that meant heavier security measures such as moving them around almost constantly and regulating outside contact.
For this reason she couldn’t be at the tournament so it was an automatic forfeit, and that's when she began to hate her sister, Tabane, for causing all this - especially ruining her chance to meet Ichika.
All outgoing and incoming contacts was monitored and regulated, so there was no way Ichika - an ordinary boy that time - could contact Houki, and she was unable to contact Ichika either since the Japanese government couldn't risk a nobody like Ichika to obtain information regarding whereabouts of her.
As a result, she begins to put more time in Kendo, which was the only connection she thought she had left with Ichika. But at the same time, Kendo became an outlet for her to vent her frustration - by bashing opponents - which she realized after winning a national tournament. (This is the event mentioned in Anime - a year before their reunion)
While watching the other girl crying for losing at the tournament, she began to think that she might have crushed her - and many other competitor's - dream just so she could vent her anger. She felt self-hatred. She decided that what she had now was not a true strength, but just violence and remembered that Ichika was strong while being true to his ethical integrity, viewing it as a true strength.
With becoming strong like Ichika as her personal goal, she entered IS Academy. Although she succeeded in reuniting with Ichika, she still has that anger control problem.
(Apparently she has quite low aptitude score for an IS pilot, a 'C.' It's very likely that her status being Tabane's sister played a major role in her getting accepted.)

- Rinn -
Spoiler for About Rinn:
Rinn is also Ichika's childhood buddy, just like Houki, but unlike Houki, Rinn had less problem socializing with others due to her active, mischievous personality.
She was, however, discriminated by others due to her nationality, which led to her frustration. Just like in case of Houki, Ichika often helped her out when she was being mocked.
In fact, she is the first girl to propose to Ichika, and actually keep it. The only problem is that Ichika seriously misinterpreted her propose "When I become good at cooking, I'll cook for you every day." What she actually meant was; "When I become good at cooking, I'll be your girlfriend/wife and cook for you every day."
But Ichika, thinking it as an offer to feed him without charge, did not seriously think about this matter.
Due to her active personality, she seems to get along well with her classmates in IS Academy, since more than half of students are foreigner (from Japanese point of view) and she doesn't have to worry about her nationality.
Her main worry is that she has knowledge of her lack of visual (physical?) attractiveness (mainly the size of her breast) and possesses some complex regarding this matter.
(The word 'flat-chested' is her berserk button)
Also, her parents who seemed to get along quite well in the past (while they were running a Chinese restaurant in Japan) are separated as of now, which cause her to be somewhat gloomy whenever she think about them or her country, where they are located now.
- Charlotte -
Spoiler for About Charlotte:
Charlotte is perhaps the only girl with the least 'Tsundere' attribute, since her basic personality is that of kind, understanding and caring girl.
Ichika views her as the kindest girl among the 5, even going as far as describing her smile as 'The smile of Angel/Goddess'
The only problem is that Charlotte, even when angry, tends to keep this facial expression (with addition of the usual protruding blood vein mark) which he refers to 'The smile of Angel of Death')
She was born as a daughter of mistress to CEO of Dunoa Industry, the largest IS-production and Development Corporation in France.
Here presence wasn't noticed by Dunoa family, even to CEO himself, until Charlotte came to him after her mother died and left a letter explaining her ties to him.
Being an 'unwanted daughter' to Dunoa family, she was constantly mistreated and abused by them.
When she was found out to have a great aptitude for IS piloting, the CEO thought of a plan to keep his company afloat, which was being pressured hard for not showing much progress in development of 3rd Gen. IS.
Unlike other powerful European nations, France did not join EU and was in turn forced to develop a 3rd Gen. IS all by itself, and the burden fell heavily on Dunoa Industry.
When the company continuously failed to show any viable result, the French government considered pulling its privilege - a license to develop and produce IS - which even made CEO more frantic about the matter.
Unable to produce satisfactory result, the CEO decides to obtain the data from elsewhere, and faked Charlotte's gender. Believing Charlotte to be the world's 2nd male IS pilot, the French government chose her as one of representative candidate, and sent her to IS Academy. According to Dunoa's plan, Charlotte was to get close to Ichika (This part was no problem since Charlotte (under the alias of 'Charles') and Ichika were the only 'male' in the Academy and would naturally be assigned same room.) and steal important data from his IS, Byakku Shiki, which was viewed as the newest 3rd Gen. IS at that time.
It didn't take long for Ichika to find out that Charlotte was in fact a girl, but after hearing her story, Ichika became furious of her 'parents' and decided to help her out, planning to think of a solution for her situation in next 3 years.
(Ichika's reaction to her story might be related to his own situation, since he was abandoned by his parents)
- Laura -
Spoiler for About Laura:
Laura possesses the darkest past of all 5 heroines, since she was a test-tube baby originally created to become a weapon.
She was a part of Germany's uber-soldier project, creating a perfect combatant.
As such, she was educated with only what was needed to make her an excellent soldier; all the while being ignorant to stuff she would have learned as a normal child.
She was educated with just enough social skills to be able to function as a soldier, which was clearly nowhere near enough to become a normal girl.
She excelled at all military training she received, and maintained the top rank until the introduction of IS.
With IS thrown into the equation, the project faced a heavy obstacle, since their subject (mainly Laura) was tuned for conventional warfare and the factor of IS was never calculated.
They decide to retune Laura by replacing her left eye with artificial one, a miniature (and heavily down-graded in order to fit into human body) of Hyper-sensor package.
With it, she was supposedly to have boost in her sensory system, even when not enhanced by IS. Coupled with IS, this was to function as an additional conduit to enhance her response is IS piloting, resulting in a huge efficiency boost in IS operation.
The experiment, however, ended in a partial failure as the new eye installed malfunctioned and couldn’t be turned off when needed (she couldn't turn it off even if she wanted to) and as a result, Laura's performance not only as a IS pilot but as a soldier began to deteriorate.
Being raised with the sole purpose of being an excellent soldier, she was devastated when she couldn't keep up with other IS pilots, who began to treat Laura as a defect and not as a comrade.
This is when Laura first met Chihuyu, who agreed to become a temporary IS instructor in German military. To Laura, Chihuyu appeared to be the ultimate goal that she should pursuit, and with Chihuyu's help, Laura was able to recover and retake the top rank in her unit.
From that point on, Laura developed a fanatical admiration toward Chihuyu, to the point of almost being worship.
So when Ichika was kidnapped and Chihuyu lost chance to win a 2nd Mondo Grosso, Laura viewed his existence itself to be a disgrace to Chihuyu's fame, and therefore unacceptable.
When Laura asked Chihuyu about Ichika, Chihuyu told her about what is like having a brother, and warned Laura about the strange influence her brother has toward others, telling Laura that she'd be careful when meeting him; otherwise she might fall in love with him.
She couldn't understand what Chihuyu meant at that time, but...

As for when Ichika shares a room with Tatenashi, she always tease him a lot that make him feels really tired every time he open his room door and Tatenashi wait on the doorstep wearing hadaka apron(actually she wears a bikini swimsuit underneath, but it's not visible from the front :P) and ask the question of a housewife(which one do you want first? Dinner, bath, or me? She's just such a tease XD).

Spoiler for A thought about roommate...:
In fact, Laura is slowly being educated by Charlotte about 'what normal girls are like' lesson. In that sense, she is very fortunate to have Charlotte as roommate.
If I remember correctly, Houki's roommate is not mentioned in any detail, just enough to explain that she has a roommate.
Rinn's roommate is also treated as minor character, but at least she has a name (First name is Tina) and that she loves snacks.
Oh, and I'm worried the similarity between Tatenashi and Sango. (From Kampfer)
They are both president of student council, and are charismatic, overly capable, cool-headed and love to tease main characters...
In kampfer, that kind of situation result in Seno believing that Sango has no interest in him whatsoever, and just likes to tease him for fun.
And in both works, the main characters don't consider them as possible girlfriend candidate because they are too capable...
Well, I hope Ichika fairs better than Seno... (Fortunately, he has much more backbone than the other guy)
