I tend to believe more in the theory that it's a world that helps people accept their death before moving onto their next life, but the dreamworld/coma theory has merits as well (and obviously it wouldn't be the first time this subject was dealt with by Key...)

The giant umbrella term for this whole series IS "Life", remember.
