Usualy it mostly a lots of layers , not all at 100% opacity, with brush than I picked on deviantArt over a solid white background. After that I rework the saturation, contrast, brightness ans levels for the whole background and often in specific area. But now I am often reusing part of the picture used for the render to make the background, witht the help of brushs or not. I could be more specific if you whould have some more specific signatures's background in mind.
