Well, we do know quite bit about Maka, Soul on the hand is much more mysterious, and generally we get pieces of his past, like him being from a rich family (called Evans) that he detests. How Maka and Soul met will probably explained at some point. Most mangas tend take a longer time to fill out pasts of their protags.
