The Ep3 ED worked with Xebec on various occasions in Fafner and Busou Renkin though (so did some of the ep10 and ep11 guys) and let's face it, the episode was ace because Otsuka storyboarded it all for them.

From the ep blurbs of ep7-11, basically there's a huge battle in 7-8, and then in the aftermath Simon wanders into a river and sees a bright light. Eventually he finds Niru (the mysterious blond girl revealed ages ago in character art) in a container. As they explore on they discover she's a lost princess to the great empire. Oh and it also seems the Gurren-dan is getting HUGE and much harder to hide in plain sight after ep7. lol

Basically I think the three stages are Discovery -> World -> Space
