Okay then looking over what you said, my own response may seem long then...but here we go!

Oh, yes he does have the basic, but I don't think he can learn it fast enough especially since he will have to face a master. However, the idea of nullifying ME entirely might be better for the story then just resetting the encroachment in terms of speed, but in the last chapter he went gospel of darkness, and has a way out of putting his students in danger from himself. However, he clearly can not beat Fate by festival's end without it unless he discovers a new power.

It's easy enough to nullify Magica Erebia when Negi is considered to be a "god of development." I'm not saying he can master Kanka if your project is speed, but if he can get a grasp on it, we might have a kind of Negi Versus Takahata effect here, where he surprises the audience...of course, you could introduce something else to the mix....which brings me to your next point.

One snag is that it will eliminate Negi's utility belt fighting style and his synthesized spells (which is just about the only original thing he has done in the manga). Would just having him incapable of binding with the spell(the elemental forms), but still being able to take them in seem like a cop out?


I actually used a technique similar to this myself. Negi didn't have Magica Erebia, he had not learned it yet, but he used his knowledge of the ability to cast a spell around oneself, his knowledge of a spell being simply energy, to absorb it into him. It helped to see an older version of himself try that too, but that's just my story.

The downfall for me was that without Magica Erebia, the elemental form was simply a speed boost with electrical effect, there was no absorption of enemy power....but that's just me. As for his synthesized spells, it won't nullify the titan slayer if I am correct, getting rid of Magica Erebia...it comes down to how you synthesize.

How would your readers react if Negi went completely light and lightning god like? Would they react positively to a Kanka-thunder form? Or would you try combos instead, perhaps a combination of Thousand Thunder and Titan slayer...there are many things Negi can do and still keep his "utility belt." style...

After all, are the pactios still there? That's a whole new ball game...

On the Seals: In my fic there are four levels existence defining energy kai (the energy of the physical body) mental (the energy mages use to gather kai around them) Astral (energy of the emotions, ghost, and demons) and a fourth in the realm of souls. There is a sort of hierarchy to awareness to these energies, and while someone might know of them or even see them detecting them is an exponentially increasingly difficult task as you go up. The seals are currently detectable by so few it is unfair to classify them in either category.

Here is your main problem. What I can suggest though is a kind of ultimatum. A quick charge, a search for either someone capable of detecting or some way or learning the skill. This might be a good chance for OC development, so I personally would have the character try to go at it themselves....but it's up to you. I assume the soul is the highest level, but I can also assume a loop-hole here.

The soul is the keeper of emotion, emotion and the soul together are the vessel that use the body to draw Kai and magic to them. The hierarchy, this very ladder, is the key.

Reverse engineering is the key. The soul might be nigh impossible to find, but it you can tag it through the magical and Kai, the astral energies, you can follow the train upwards, the breadcrumbs leading to the Cheshire Cat...and don't ask me why it was eating bread, for I frankly don't know.

Of course, this would take skill too, and it would still be difficult, but if you could narrow the energy signatures down...it would be easier to find her, no?
