I don't judge by popularity, but popularity is often a sign of a mediocre production aimed to please the masses. The more there are people the more the movie has to streamline, which means cliche plot and shallow characters.
Avatar is just another streamlined movie and while the effects are neat they aren't the best reason to visit a theater.
