We haven't been told why Eri stopped pursuing her ballet aspirations, and I'm guessing that it has something to do with the difficulties of making it big in the performing scene. She probably wasn't trying to embarrass them, nor was she explictly helping them. It's more about showing them that the path to becoming an idol was not a bed of roses, and thinking that they would give up after that.
